Greetings ARIA members,

Today’s listserv contains the following:

  • St. Mary’s University – two tenure-track finance positions available
  • Proposed ARIA By-Laws Amendment
  • Robert C. Witt Award Fund
  • Annual meeting hotel reservation deadline extended

Please see the attached electronic file containing two tenure-track positions in finance, St. Mary’s University, San Antonio, Texas.  These job postings will be available on the ARIA website at www.aria.org

ARIA Members:

The cost of postage and materials for the election of officers approaches $350.  Payments to conduct last year’s annual meeting survey totaled $19.95.

In the conduct of its elections, Section IV (B) of ARIA’s By-Laws currently stipulates that:

The Executive Director shall send ballots containing the original and any additional nominations, with a return envelope addressed to the Executive Director, to all members who have paid their dues for the current year.

Because of the ease and cost effectiveness of electronic mail, ARIA’s Board of Directors motioned at the January 2006 Mid-year Board Meeting to modify the By-Laws to allow means of communication, in additional to the mails, to conduct future elections.

The proposed revision to the By-Laws reads:

The Executive Director shall send ballots containing the original and any additional nominations, with a return envelope, or use other appropriate means of communication as determined by the Board, addressed to the Executive Director, to all members who have paid their dues for the current year.

This amendment to the By-Laws will be brought before the membership for discussion and a vote at the general membership meeting to be held at the Capital Hilton, Washington, DC,  Monday, August 7, 2006, 5:00 PM, Eastern Time.

Prior to that time, please direct any questions to Tony Biacchi, ARIA Executive Director, biacchi@cpcuiia.org

Robert C. Witt Award Fund

Dear Friends,

For those of us who were fortunate enough to know him, Bob Witt was a distinguished scholar, an outstanding teacher, a supportive mentor and a good friend.  He was much like Will Rogers because he had something positive to say about all the people he met and he met many.  He treated everyone with respect and went out of his way to greet newcomers to the ARIA meetings.  Bob enjoyed the learning experience provided by the meetings and always gave constructive comments to those presenting papers.  As Bob’s former PhD students and colleagues, we benefited from him the most, but I know many others also benefited from his kind words, humor and presence.

As you know, The Robert C. Witt Award is given annually for the best feature article in the Journal of Risk and Insurance.  Unfortunately, the Robert C. Witt Award is not funded.  The monetary award has been suspended by the association until the funding is put in place.

If you are willing to help, please write a check payable to ARIA and indicate in the check memo or in a note that the donation is intended for support of the Robert C. Witt Award fund.  To those of you who have made a contribution, thank you.  We hope to raise $20,000 to fund a $1,000 award each year. The donations can be directed to the ARIA Executive Office at the following address:

Mr. Tony Biacchi, Executive Director
ARIA
716 Providence Road
Malvern, PA 19355-3402

Note that ARIA is a 501(c)(3) organization and these donations should be fully tax deductible to the donors.

Thank you very much for your support.

Friends of Bob Witt
