New Actuarial Journal Award At last year’s annual board meeting of the American Risk and Insurance Association (ARIA), Patrick Brockett, at the request
of the ARIA Board, made a presentation related to creating a new
ARIA research award tentatively titled “The
ARIA Actuarial Journal Award.” It was approved by the
ARIA Board, and Pat Brockett was appointed to chair a committee to raise the funds to endow this award.
The award will be given annually for the best risk management or insurance related article in the Society of Actuaries’ North American Actuarial Journal or the Casualty
Actuarial Society’s journal Variance. Pat Brockett has started off the funding of the award with a gift. The first award will be given in 2011. It is hoped this will draw the Society of Actuaries, the Casualty Actuarial Society, and
ARIA even closer. It is modeled on the CAS’s
ARIA Award presented annually at the
ARIA Annual Meeting for the paper published in an
ARIA journal which has the greatest impact on casualty actuarial science. Predictive modeling, mathematical economics of insurance, regulation, reinsurance, and other areas which are published in these two journals are very important, and
much of this work deserves recognition by the ARIA community.
ARIA has a goal of raising at least $25,000 to fund the award for perpetuity and would like to request that contributions
be made by ARIA members to the funding. Checks of any size can be sent to: Tony Biacchi

a check. Also, if you can think of any firms or individuals that should be contacted for funding, please send an email to Pat Brockett at brockett@mail.utexas.edu so he can follow up with them. Names of people at the suggested firms would be useful if you have a contact there. Thank you.
