Call for  NominationsThough the 2011 ARIA election of officers is several months away, it is not too early to consider individuals who might be interested in serving on ARIA’s Board of Directors.  Office is open to all ARIA members regardless of residence.Two members will be elected to a three-year term on the board.  One Board position will represent the insurance industry or an insurance organization/association, and the other position will represent academia.  Nominations are also open for Vice President, although Board members whose terms are expiring are usually considered first for nomination for this position.Names of individuals for consideration as possible nominees to the 2011-2012 ARIA Board of Directors should be emailed to Vickie Bajtelsmit at vickie.bajtelsmit@colostate.edu by February 18.  You are not required to provide a nomination for each office.  For each name you submit, please indicate the position for which you’d like the individual slated.  The slate of nominees will be presented to the Board for their approval and shared with the membership. Election ballots will be distributed to ARIA’s current members in April.  Individuals who have not renewed their membership for 2011 can do so online at www.wiley.com or by calling Wiley-Blackwell at 1-800-835-6770.

 

ARIA 2011 Annual Meeting Call for Papers and Concurrent Session Proposals ARIA’s 2011 Annual Meeting is scheduled for August 7-10 at the Marriott San Diego Hotel and Marina in San Diego, California.  The deadline for submissions is February 18, 2011.  Please see the attached document for additional information.In addition to inviting the submission of single papers, the ARIA Program Committee invites members to submit proposals for entire concurrent sessions of one hour to one and one-half hours.  The deadline for submissions is February 18, 2011.  Proposals may be submitted electronically as a file attachment in Acrobat (.pdf) or Word (.doc) format.  If you decide to submit a hardcopy, please send four copies.  Proposals should be submitted to the ARIA Vice President and 2011 Program Chair:

Early Career Scholarly Achievement Award for 2011 

This award honors the distinguished achievement of RMI scholars who are within 10 years of award of a Ph.D. degree.  Applicants should have a significant number of high-quality publications relative to the length of their academic career, as the award is intended to be a research award.  The Early Career Scholarly Achievement Award is a non-monetary award and will be awarded only when an exceptional candidate is identified.The application deadline is March 1, 2011. The application and supporting materials should be emailed to Steven Pottier at spottier@uga.edu   Please see the attached document for additional information and application.

 

Excellence in Teaching Award for 2011 This award recognizes excellence in risk management and insurance teaching.  Applicants should have a distinguished record of excellent teaching throughout their academic career.  The Excellence in Teaching Award is a non-monetary award and will be awarded only when an exceptional candidate is identified.  The application and supporting materials should be emailed to Jing Ai (jing.ai@hawaii.edu), University of Hawaii at Manoa.  The application deadline is April 1, 2011.  Please see the attached documents for additional information and application.

 

 Hagen Family Foundation Travel Award for 2011 

Applications are now being accepted for the 2011 Hagen Family Foundation Travel Award.  Awards of up to $1,500 each will be granted to faculty and/or doctoral students who attend and present a paper at the 2011 ARIA Annual Meeting August 7-10 in San Diego, California.  The application deadline is March 18, 2011.  Please see the attached document for additional information.  Questions about the award should be directed to the Hagen Family Foundation Travel Award Committee Chair Jacqueline Volkman Wise at volkman@fordham.edu

 

Bob Hedges Undergraduate Student Award for 2011Since 2003, ARIA has offered an annual award in honor of Bob Hedges, an ARIA past president and long-time active member of our organization.  This tradition will continue for 2011.  The Hedges Undergraduate Student Award is made to an undergraduate student studying risk management and insurance or a related field, and is intended to cover expenses for the student to attend the ARIA Annual Meeting.  This year’s meeting will be held on August 7-10 at the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina in San Diego, California.

 Kulp-Wright Book Award for 2011The Kulp-Wright Book Award is presented annually by the American Risk and Insurance Association to the author(s) of a book considered to be the most influential text published on the economics of risk management and insurance.  The author(s) of the winning publication will be presented with an award certificate at ARIA 2011 Annual Meeting which will be held on August 7-10 in San Diego, California.The Kulp-Wright Book Award committee is reviewing publications for the 2011 award.  To be eligible for the 2011 Kulp-Wright Book Award, the book must have been published in 2009.  The primary contribution of the book should lie in the primary fields of risk management and insurance, and should appeal to a broad cross-section of persons concerned with the fields of risk management and insurance.The deadline for submissions is May 1, 2011.  If you would like to suggest that the committee review a specific book, please send the title, author(s), and publisher information to Tyler Leverty at ty-leverty@uiowa.edu

 

Les B. Strickler Innovation in Instruction Award 2011 Call for ProposalsARIA members and others interested in risk management and insurance education are invited to submit proposals detailing innovative ideas they have developed and used in risk management and insurance instruction.  The deadline for proposals is March 30, 2011.  Please see the attached document for additional information or contact Nat Pope at npope@ilstu.edu
