Bob Hedges Undergraduate Student Award for 2012

Since 2003, ARIA has offered an annual award in honor of Bob Hedges, an ARIA past president and long-time active member of our organization.  This tradition will continue for 2012.  The Hedges Undergraduate Student Award is made to an undergraduate student studying risk management and insurance or a related field, and is intended to cover expenses for the student to attend the ARIA Annual Meeting.  This year’s meeting will be held August 5-8 at The Depot Renaissance Minneapolis Hotel in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The deadline for proposals is May 1, 2012.  Please see the attached document for additional information. All proposals should be submitted by email to:

Prof. Paul Thistle

Hedges Award Committee Chair

University of Nevada Las Vegas

paul.thistle@unlv.edu

Please include "Hedges Award Application" in the subject

Kulp-Wright Book Award for 2012

The Kulp-Wright Book Award is presented annually by the American Risk and Insurance Association to the author(s) of a book considered to be the most influential text published on the economics of risk management and insurance.  The author(s) of the winning publication will be presented with an award certificate at ARIA 2012 Annual Meeting which will be held August 5-8 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The Kulp-Wright Book Award committee is reviewing publications for the 2012 award.  To be eligible for the 2012 Kulp-Wright Book Award, the book must have been published in 2010.  The primary contribution of the book should lie in the primary fields of risk management and insurance, and should appeal to a broad cross-section of persons concerned with the fields of risk management and insurance.

The deadline for submissions is May 1, 2012.  If you would like to suggest that the committee review a specific book, please send the title, author(s), and publisher information to Tyler Leverty at ty-leverty@uiowa.edu

Electronic election ballots and biographies will be distributed soon to all current 2012 ARIA members.  All current members are encouraged to take a few minutes to vote.  For those members who have not renewed their ARIA membership and wish to do so, please renew immediately at www.wiley.com or by calling Wiley-Blackwell Publishing at 1-800-835-6770.   If any current members prefer to receive a paper ballot, please contact the ARIA Executive Office at aria@TheInstitutes.org or call 1-610-640-1997.  Thank you.

Plan to attend and celebrate ARIA’s 80th anniversary at the 2012 Annual Meeting halfway between New York and L.A.  Minneapolis is a world-class city with fabulous shopping, dining, and entertainment.  Sidewalk cafes and shopping; entertainment abounds in the Warehouse District and the Hennepin Theatre District.  Getting around is a snap using the light rail transit system with stops downtown, the airport, and Mall of America.  No matter what the weather, easily travel between many hotels and attractions using the skyway system.

Art, science, and history are on display at more than 57 museums in the city and well-known places such as Walter Art Center and Weisman Art Museum that have made their mark nationally.  Stroll along the historic Riverfront District and see the mills where Minneapolis got its start in the flour industry.  Enjoy several outdoor art festivals during the weekend prior to the Annual Meeting.  Shop ‘til you drop: enjoy no sales tax on apparel and shoes in Minnesota, including more than 500 stores at the Mall of America.

Outdoor recreation is year-round in the City of Lakes; the Mississippi River, and numerous parks and lakes provide a beautiful background for walking, biking and more.  Experience the City of Lakes at its best and walk or bike on 50 miles of trails along the Ground Rounds Scenic Byway or enjoy paths winding through the city along the Mississippi River.  Minneapolis has been ranked as the best biking city in the country by Bicycling Magazine as well as the #4 bicycling city in the nation by US Census Bureau.  Minneapolis has 81 miles of on-street bikeways and 85 miles of off-street bikeways.
