Minutes of the 1999 Risk Theory Society Meeting

Meeting called to order at 4:45 p.m. by President Dick Butler.

The following documents were distributed to members:

  • Treasurer’s Report

  • Information on the 2000 Site (University of Minnesota)

  • Minutes from the 1998 meeting

Minutes: The minutes from the 1998 annual business meeting were approved without change.

Attendance/Membership: The 1999 Risk Theory Seminar was held April 16-18 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.  The program consisted of nine papers presented by 13 individuals (16 total authors or co-authors with three not attending).  Ten of the presenters were new RTS members and three were current RTS members.  After the 1999 Seminar there were 72 members of RTS.  Three members lost their memberships for failure to attend the 1999 Seminar (D. Guo, R. Watt, I. Venezia).

Treasurer’s Report: Mike Smith presented the report.  He reported that requests for travel reimbursement from the presenters at the 1998 Seminar were lower than the relatively high amounts requested in the previous two years.  Treasurer Smith asked for guidance with regard to the printing of the bound volumes of papers from the annual Seminar.  Currently copies are produced for meeting supporters and for the libraries at Ohio State University, the College of Insurance, and the Wharton School.  A motion to authorize the Treasurer to decide on the number of hardcopies to produce was seconded and approved.  A repeat of last year’s unanimous expression of gratitude and support for Mike Smith’s continuation in the role of Treasurer followed his report.

Meeting Arrangements: Dick Butler reported briefly on the arrangements for next year’s RTS Seminar at the University of Minnesota, to be held April 14-16, 2000 in Minneapolis.  Keith Crocker was recognized for the excellent local arrangements for this year’s Seminar.

Site Selection for year 2001: Sites nominated for the year 2001 were

Louisiana State University (Jim Garven)
University of Calgary (Norma Nielson)
University of Montreal (Robert Gagne)

After a brief promotional presentation by the indicated representative of each site the University of Montreal was chosen in a close ballot.

Officer Elections: Keith Crocker was nominated for the Secretary, and upon a motion that the nominations be closed he won by acclamation.  Rob Hoyt will be the President for the next year, and Dick Butler will be the Past President.

Recognition of New Life Members: Rob Hoyt reported that the following individuals have qualified as Life Members of RTS: Norma Nielson, Emilio Venezian, and Richard Woll.

Other Business: It was suggested that authors of accepted papers for the 2000 Seminar be encouraged to submit their papers in .pdf format.  For the 2000 Seminar Keith Crocker volunteered to convert papers to .pdf format for those authors who were unable to do so.

With no further business remaining the annual business meeting was adjourned at 5:10 p.m.
